How can acupuncture support and improve fertility?

Are you starting out on your conception journey or have you been trying for a while? It might be that you are looking to conceive your first child or are trying for another child? You might have heard that acupuncture is considered to be beneficial for fertility but you are not sure how?

Hormonal balance and regular ovulation, stress-levels, diet and lifestyle all have an impact on your fertility. Being in the best possible shape emotionally and physically will significantly increase your chances to conceive and have a healthy pregnancy, and acupuncture can greatly assist you in this.

"I had acupuncture to support me successfully through my IVF journey. I found it very helpful to support my IVF treatment at every stage. It was also amazing for my general wellbeing and helped me to reduce stress levels during an intense period of my life. Acupuncture treatment with Tatjana made me feel relaxed, content and supported. Tatjana really spends the time to understand your situation before each treatment and really goes out of her way to provide a bespoke service. If you are in doubt that acupuncture can help you then just try a few sessions with Tatjana first!"

Fertility focused acupuncture has been shown to increase chances of conception for women who are trying to conceive by:

balancing and optimising hormone levels
regulating the menstrual cycle and promoting ovulation
increasing blood flow to the ovaries
addressing underlying conditions such as PCOS and endometriosis
enhancing the quality of eggs and improving the thickness of the endometrium
promoting implantation and supporting pregnancy to term.

Apart from restoring balance within the delicate network of hormones, menstrual cycle and the whole reproductive system, acupuncture can help to manage your stress levels, thus enabling you to cope with any anxiety or worry you might experience on your fertility journey. By calming the nervous system, acupuncture promotes relaxation and emotional equilibrium, and aids conception.

When to start treatment?

Preparation is key to a successful conception, the best possible pregnancy and a healthy baby. It takes about three months for the egg and sperm to develop. Therefore, three months is the minimum time you and your partner should give yourselves to get in shape by optimising your diet, lifestyle and stress-levels. Accordingly, I recommend to start regular acupuncture treatment as early as possible, three months would be ideal. But even if you think you do not have the time to wait or have already started trying for a baby, acupuncture can be still of great benefit. I work with women at every stage of their fertility journey. We would work together on optimising your menstrual cycle, look at your diet, lifestyle and overall health. I offer practical and emotional support and space to talk and to be heard.

Acupuncture for IVF support

Acupuncture is the most commonly used complementary therapy alongside IVF, ICSI and other assisted reproductive technologies. There is a wide body of research showing that acupuncture increases the success rate of IVF cycles and many fertility clinics recommend it alongside their treatment.

Acupuncture supports assisted conception by reducing stress, improving hormone balance and embryo development, and reducing the unwanted side effects of medication. Studies have shown the effectiveness of acupuncture at various stages of IVF treatments, in particular:

in the lead-up to a cycle
pre and post embryo transfer
and the ‘two-week wait’.

A recent review suggests that it is most beneficial to have acupuncture throughout the whole IVF cycle. Ideally, we would start working together three months in advance of your ART cycle in order to optimise the reproductive system and the number of recruitable follicles, and generally building up your overall health. I also work with women before and after the transfer.
